Scott will challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in what is expected to be an extremely expensive race with plenty of national attention, according to the AP. The Republican Governor endorsed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election after he won the Florida primary.

“You’re probably surprised, but I’m going to announce I’m running for senator,” Scott told Politico. “You’re shocked, right?,” he said jokingly since the rumors that he would be running for Senate had been circulating for months.

When asked if he considers himself a “Donald Trump Republican,” Scott responded by saying, “I consider myself Rick Scott. I don’t consider myself any type of anything,” in an interview with Politico Sunday. “I run on what I believe in. I’ve been very clear,” he continued. “People ask me that a bunch of times, about ‘Are you this or are you that?’ No. I’m Rick Scott. I grew up poor. I believe in jobs.”

Scott has been Governor of Florida since 2011 and had never ran for public office before running for Governor.

He is expected to officially make a public announcement Monday afternoon.
