New York taxpayers spend nearly $200,000 every single year to fund the salary of an obnoxious “drunk judge” who as of April had only worked one day thus far this year.
Yet as bad as this sounds, it only gets worse …
Rochester City Court Judge Leticia Astacio earned the nickname of “drunk judge” after a court convicted her of a DWI in 2017 for a driving incident that occurred a year earlier, according to local station WHAM.
As of the start of April, the “drunk judge” had not appeared at her job since Feb. 27. Prior to that, she last worked on Aug. 31 of 2017. This means Astacio has worked only one day this year.
Yet as bad as all this sounds, again it only gets worse …
WHAM noted that the state’s Commission on Legislative, Judicial and Executive Compensation recently approved a raise for all New York judges, including Astacio. As a result, the “drunk judge” now collects a whopping $187,200 salary, all at the expense of New York taxpayers.
Surely, it can’t get any worse than this?
After some in the media, including WHAM, began reporting on Astacio’s outrageous behavior and pay, she responded by posting a status update to Facebook accusing the media of being racist.
“Why’s my name in the headlines?” she wrote Monday afternoon. “You’re mad because I’m a young minority getting paid.”
In a video post uploaded later that evening, she attempted to argue that she’s been skipping work due to unspecified medical reasons.
Yet she seemed more than capable of brushing her own hair and angrily ranting/raving for her Facebook friends and followers:
Her arrogance is astounding, though it did at least trigger a positive side effect: A woman launched a Change.org petition demanding that Astacio be removed from the bench.
“Judge Astacio has proven herself to be everything a judge should not be. Her elitist attitude lost her respect and spurred anger through the Rochester Community, she continually victimized herself through court preceedings rather than take accountability for her actions, and to this day, refuses to seek treatment for her alcohol addiction or do anything to improve her situation; opting instead to consistently make things worse,” the petition reads.
“It is time that she has the freedom to make these mistakes on her own and no longer have them funded by Rochester taxpayer money!”
