Democrats introduce anti-gun legislation with a new angle: ‘Bullet control’

Democrats just don’t know when to quit.

On the heels of Saturday’s March For Our Lives gun control rally, Democrats, led by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), introduced legislation on Monday that would require instant background checks for anyone purchasing ammunition, the Sun Sentinel reports.

“I really think it’s important to underscore that without bullets a gun is just a hunk of useless metal, and a would-be killer lacks the means to actually kill or maim,” Wasserman Schultz said at a press conference.

The Florida congresswoman sponsored The Ammunition Background Check Act in the House, while Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced it in the Senate.

The legislation would follow the model of California, which will require background checks for ammunition buyers beginning next year.

Wasserman Schultz said it is a “loophole” that the current system allows someone to “buy as much ammunition as they want, without so much as being asked their first name.”

Her proposal included its own “loophole:” the bill would not require background checks for individuals who buy ammunition at shooting ranges or hunting camps with the intention of using it there.

Blumenthal said passing the bill would “make it harder for dangerous people to circumvent law and acquire the resources to commit gun violence.”

The NRA has already opposed “bullet control” measures in California. Wasserman Schultz brushed off the criticism that restricting the purchase of bullets would violate the Constitution’s Second Amendment

“You do not have the right to bear bullets,” she asserted.

Wasserman Schultz also defended the legislation on Twitter.

Many observers disagreed with the lawmaker.
