Potential 2020 Dem nominee Liz Warren under fire to settle ‘one of her problems’ with a simple ‘spit test’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren just can’t escape the controversy over her claims of Cherokee ancestry.

Basing her claim on family lore and high cheek bones, the Massachusetts lawmaker and potential 2020 presidential candidate is now being called on to take a DNA test for real proof.

Given Democrats’ love of science, how can the progressive darling refuse?

The Berkshire Eagle, a liberal newspaper that endorsed Warren in 2012, is calling on her to “screw up her courage and take the spit test.” The editorial said a positive test “would permanently resolve the issue — while possibly shutting down President Trump.”

On the other hand, if the “spit test” doesn’t work in her favor, the paper said “it would be an opportunity for the senator to perform an act rarely seen among politicians: an admission of her error and a full-throated apology to Native American tribes and anyone else offended by her spurious claim.”

“By facing the truth and taking responsibility for it, she would disarm her enemies and show potential voters that she was human and capable of mistakes, just like them,” the editorial stated.

Trump has indelibly dubbed the potential 2020 challenger “Pocahontas.” The issue not only hangs over Warren’s Senate reelection campaign, but is all but certain to be a focus should the two face off in the presidential election campaign.

As noted by Republican John Kingston, who is running to unseat Warren, a lingering question here is “did she claim to be a member of a Native American tribe in order to obtain preferential consideration for employment at Harvard University?”

The idea of a DNA test has gained the support of Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi.

In an op-ed titled, “Taking a DNA test could solve at least one of Elizabeth Warren’s political problems,” Vennochi took a pot shot at Trump as she acknowledged that the issue must be dealt with.

“I’ve written before about the disproportionate unfairness of decrying Warren’s dodge on this matter, given Trump’s blatant lies on so much more,” she wrote. “Yet, as reported by the Globe, it’s a political reality for Warren that’s not going away.”

The Globe reported earlier this year that Warren “is leaving herself vulnerable by not clearing the air in a definitive way.”

For the record, Warren passed on an opportunity to take a DNA test last year when she returned a kit sent on her birthday by Independent challenger Shiva Ayyadurai, an MIT-educated entrepreneur, The Washington Times reported.

Ayyadurai’s campaign slogan: “Only a real Indian can defeat the fake Indian.”
