NRA brutally trolls HBO host with epic new merch: Get the ‘shirt that made John Oliver cry’

If John Oliver thought the NRA would lie down and take his mocking, he was sorely mistaken.

The National Rifle Association fired back at the “Last Week Tonight” host for his scathing criticism of their television channel, sarcastically thanking Oliver for promoting the network and selling a T-shirt the HBO regular had ridiculed.

Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino excoriated Oliver, telling NRA TV’s Grant Stinchfield he would have liked the comedian to “please throw me on there, too,” joking that the anti-NRA TV “Last Week Tonight” segment served as a form of unintended promotion.

“[Oliver] puts out there that we’re ‘trolling for content,’ and then–how dumb are you to fall into the trap and play the content? And then he gives out the website. I mean, is somebody giving this guy a royalty on shirts and stuff?”

Stinchfield had appeared in an NRA TV ad that portrayed the network as being a source of truth, opposed to the mainstream media.

In the promo, a television plays a series of clips from various news networks. One of programs to appear on the screen is “Last Week Tonight.”

Stinchfield, dressed in a white T-shirt bearing the words “Socialist Tears,” proceeds to smash the television with a sledge hammer.

The ad closes with the words “Our greatest weapon is truth.”

On his show, Oliver mocked the ad.

“If NRA members are annoyed with what I’m saying right now they should do the exact same thing and smash their expensive televisions with large sledgehammers.”

At the end of his segment, Oliver played a parody video of the NRA in which he also smashed a television. His shirt read “Antagonistic T-Shirt.”

NRA TV responded with a message of gratitude for the HBO host: “Thanks for the coverage on @LastWeekTonight, @iamjohnoliver. Keep watching #NRATV and you might learn why America has a Second Amendment.”

They then revealed that the shirt Stinchfield wore in the video, which they dubbed “the shirt that made John Oliver cry,” is up for sale.

Someone should tell John Oliver: if you want to pick on someone who won’t fight back, a group of devoted gun owners probably isn’t your best target.
