U.S. Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, who happens to be openly gay, broke his thumb in practice last week. It won’t keep him out of the Olympics, but the next day Kenworthy tweeted one particular “silver lining” that he felt would come of it – the ‘inability’ to shake the hand of Vice President Mike Pence.
“Broke my thumb yesterday in practice,” Kenworthy tweeted. “It won’t stop me from competing (obvi) but it does prevent me from shaking Pence’s hand so… Silver linings! Will be giving my teammates (and literally everyone else) an enthusiastic “thumbs up!” of encouragement the rest of the trip.”

Kenworthy has been openly critical of the vice president, whom he perceives as anti-gay, as recently early this month, when he called Pence a “bad fit” to lead the Olympic delegation on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“To have somebody leading the delegation that’s directly attacked the LGBTQ community,” Kenworthy said, “and a Cabinet in general that just sort of stands against us and has tried to do things to set us back, it just seems like a bad fit.”
Kenworthy made history this year along with figure skater Adam Rippon as the first two openly gay men on the U.S. Olympic Team. Rippon has also been critical of the Trump administration over perceived “homophobia,” and has stated that he would decline to attend a White House Olympic ceremony.
Predictably, Kenworthy took a lot of heat for his tweet:
Wow! You are such a baby! Maybe you need to grow up a little! You want everyone to accept you while you are publically judgmental of others. Everything is not about you! Shocker! https://t.co/BZ5LaTjgGl

.@VP Mike Pence has all of the class and sense you so desparately need. Be a man, if only for one instant, and shake his hand. https://t.co/AI9gxHfgmf

You are being so stupid and political. Mike Pence @VP is a fine man and a great VP and has said nothing about you. Quit trying to gain the spotlight over nothing. I'm gay , have every faith in the goodness of Mike Pence, share his Christianity. I'd be honored to shake his hand https://t.co/RArC8fHzBO

Instead of being part of Team USA, this loser continues to dwell on his gay politics and insulting VP Pence. An affront to sportsmanship and loyalty to country while on foreign soil. Newsflash: Mike Pence only shakes hands with winners & patriots. He has class. You don't. https://t.co/LYdunsTTUU
