With public attention focused on questionable conduct at the FBI, some of the Bureau’s employees can’t take the heat.
The New York Times on Friday published an op-ed titled “Why I Am Leaving the FBI.” The paper failed to note that the piece’s author, Special Agent Josh Campbell, served directly under James Comey and has reportedly donated frequently to Democratic political candidates.
Campbell claimed that the FBI is being “tarnished” by “politicians seeking partisan gain.”
“FBI agents are dogged people who do not care about the direction of political winds,” he wrote. “But to succeed in their work, they need public backing. Scorched-earth attacks from politicians with partisan goals now threaten that support, raising corrosive doubts about the integrity of the FBI that could last for generations.”
The agent’s remarks alluded to the House Intelligence Committee’s probe into the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign.
In December, it was revealed that senior FBI agent Peter Strzok, who played leading roles in both the Trump and Hillary Clinton private email server cases, was removed from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation due to a series of anti-Trump, pro-Clinton texts he exchanged with FBI lawyer Lisa Page–with whom he was having an affair.
On Friday, the House Intelligence Committee, with President Trump’s approval, declassified a memo detailing the FBI’s use of FISA warrants to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
Among other revelations, the memo noted that FBI officials knew the largely unverified Steele dossier was financed by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign, but did not disclose that information to the FISA court when using the dossier to obtain a surveillance warrant.
Campbell acknowledged the two stories but said they did not mean there is agency-wide bias against President Trump.
“What, then, are we to make of the recent allegations of political bias at the F.B.I., particularly those involving two employees whose cringe-worthy text messages continue to threaten the agency’s reputation? While it would be disingenuous to claim that those two are not at least guilty of exercising incredibly poor judgment, it would be equally disingenuous for anyone who really knows the modern-day bureau to insinuate that the organization is plotting from within.
“Furthermore, a congressional memo released on Friday accuses the F.B.I. and the Justice Department of abusing their surveillance powers to spy on a former Trump campaign adviser. …
“There is, however, a difference between oversight by those in charge of holding the F.B.I. accountable and criticism by politicians seeking partisan gain. Political operatives are weaponizing their disagreement with a particular investigation in a bid to undermine the credibility of the entire institution. ‘The system is rigged’ is their slogan, and they are now politicizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act process used to collect critical intelligence about our adversaries.”
According to Campbell’s byline, he is a “former supervisory special agent with the FBI who served as a counterterrorism investigator and special assistant to the bureau’s director.”
While the Times does not mention under which director Campbell served as special assistant, his Twitter bio previously stated that he worked directly for Former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by President Trump last year.
Federal Election Commission data gathered by the New Boston Post showed that Campbell has donated to Democratic politicians, including $100 to Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) in November and $1,000 to Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) in 2016. Records do not show him having donated to Republican candidates.
Campbell tweeted about his resignation and op-ed on Saturday.
