Drunk driver who killed Colts linebacker was twice-deported illegal alien

Some crimes are made more tragic by knowing they could have been prevented.

The drunk driver accused of killing Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson in Indianapolis on Sunday was a Guatemalan national in the country illegally, Fox 59 reports.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, was apprehended while fleeing the scene of the crime on foot. According to Marion County Police, Orreg-Savala was driving without a license and registered with a blood-alcohol level of at least .15.

Authorities discovered the wreck early Sunday morning. The 26-year-old Jackson was reportedly the passenger in the vehicle. The other slain victim was believed to be Jackson’s Uber driver.

The two were pulled over on the highway’s emergency shoulder after the football player became sick. Orrego-Savala ran into the two men some time around 4am.

He abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene, but state troopers apprehended him on the I-70 en route to Holt Rd.

State police said the suspect was deported once in 2007 and again in 2009, and was using the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales at the time of his arrest. Federal immigration officials have a hold on him. Orrego-Savala is currently in a Marion County Jail.

The Colts released a statement regarding Jackson’s shocking death.

“We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing. Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths, and he will be greatly missed in our locker room and throughout our entire organization. We also understand that another person lost his life in the accident, only adding to our sorrow on this day. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.”

Indiana congressman Todd Rotika (R) spoke out against illegal immigration in light of Jackson’s killing.

Many Twitter users echoed Rotika in calling for action on curbing illegal immigration.
