Arizona GOP Rep. says Nunes memo provides ‘clear evidence of treason’

Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gosar said the memo released by the House shows the actions taken by top FBI and Justice Department officials to investigate the Trump campaign “constitutes treason.”

“This full throated adoption of this illegal misconduct and abuse of FISA by James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Sally Yates and Rod Rosenstein is not just criminal but constitutes treason,” Gosar said.

The House released the four-page memo prepared by the Committee on Intelligence on Friday. The memo laid out how Obama administration relied heavily on a largely unverified dossier to spy on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

FBI officials obtained a FISA warrant in October 2016 using the dossier, but did not disclose to the court the document, put together by former British spy Christopher Steele, was funded by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign.

Democrats largely opposed releasing the House GOP’s memo, arguing it would endanger FBI sources and methods of gathering intelligence. But once the memo came out, many on the left called it a “nothing burger.”

Gosar joined in with fellow Republicans in claiming the memo showed how the Obama administration weaponized the FBI against a political opponent, but added the memo also showed “clear evidence of treason.”

“This is third world politics where the official government agencies are used as campaign attack dogs,” Gosar said.

California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff called the memo’s release a “transparent attempt to discredit these institutions and undermine” the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

House Democrats have put together their own memo on the FBI’s conduct in obtaining a FISA warrant, but it’s unclear when, or if, it will be released.
