While the mainstream media lost no time attacking President Trump’s pledges in the State of the Union address, broken and unfulfilled promises by his predecessor seemed long forgotten.
Lest former President Obama’s impressively long list of assurances which were never kept be lost in the selective memories of the liberal media, a convenient Grabien News video montage provides a capsulized collection of those promises.
Many of Obama’s promises were repeated from year to year in his State of the Union addresses, but were still never kept as 140 of those broken vows were counted from 2009 through 2015. Obama repeatedly forecast the closing of Guantanamo Bay, the overhaul of corporate taxes and the passage of comprehensive immigration reform, but delivered on none.
He famously vowed to pass health care reform that would let Americans keep their insurance in 2010, while in 2009 and 2010 he assured Americans his administration would go through the budget “line by line” and eliminate needless government programs.
Obama boldly declared scientific breakthroughs were coming under his watch, such as curing cancer which he promised in 2009, 2010 and again in 2015. In 2015 he declared the U.S. would colonize outer space and turn sunlight into liquid fuel.
And with all the attention on Trump for proposed immigration reforms, Obama had quite the list of policy proposals himself – many of which sound vaguely familiar. The former president vowed to pass immigration reform every year from 2010 through 2014, and he declared his intention to secure America’s borders, enforce existing immigration laws and even create pathways to citizenship for those in the country illegally – something Trump has said he is open to.
It is equally entertaining and infuriating to relive the many broken promises delivered by Obama, especially in light of the criticisms leveled at Trump. It would be wiser for Democrats and liberal anti-Trumpers to review the last administration’s track record and Obama’s amazing lack of self-awareness as when he promised in 2013 to never make promises the government couldn’t keep as well as keeping the promises that were already made.
