Trump: It was ‘getting too cold,’ so now they say climate change

When asked if he believed in man-made global warming, President Donald Trump gave an answer that’s already sent media fact-checkers wild.

“There is a cooling and there’s a heating,” Trump said in an interview with Piers Morgan on Sunday. “I mean, look, it used to not be climate change, it used to be global warming. That wasn’t working too well because it was getting too cold all over the place.”

“The ice caps were going to melt, there were going to be gone by now, but now they’re setting records, OK?” Trump told Morgan in his first international TV interview. “They’re at a record level.”

“I’ll tell you what I believe in. I believe in clean air. I believe in crystal-clear, beautiful water. I believe in just having good cleanliness in all,” Trump said.

Trump comments sent Associated Press fact-checkers through the roof.

The AP reported the “world hasn’t had a cooler than average year since 1976 and hasn’t had a cooler than normal month since the end of 1985” and that the “last four years have been the four hottest years on record globally, with 2010 the fifth hottest year, according to NOAA.”

“Every year in the 21st century has been at least three quarters of a degree (0.4 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average and in the top 25 hottest years on record,” the AP reported. “And while a good chunk of the United States had a frigid snap recently, most of the rest of the world was far warmer than normal, according to temperature records.”

Morgan also asked Trump about re-joining the Paris climate accord. European leaders have ridiculed Trump for announcing withdrawal from the accord, despite many of them missing their own climate targets.

Trump said he’d be willing to rejoin the Paris accord, but only under radically different terms.

“Now, with that being said, if somebody said go back into the Paris Accord, it would have to be a completely different deal because we had a horrible deal. As usual, they took advantage of the United States. We were in a terrible deal,” Trump said.
