When it comes to attempting to retake the House this fall, it looks like Democrats are all in for trying to make the midterms a referendum against President Trump.
Because when you’re running against the person you clearly believe is the “most dangerous and incompetent president in American history,” or so says Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, how can anything possibly go wrong?
Perez made the comments during a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews.”
“If the Democrats get the House of Representatives, and the numbers look good and you get the 218, do you think there will be an impeachment effort next year?” Matthews asked.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” Perez said.
A visibly incredulous Matthews repeated Perez’s comment and asked, “You don’t think there’s enough evidence?”
“We’ll wait and see what director Mueller does, but I’m confident there will be a lot of people who will start asking this question,” Perez replied. “This president is reckless, childish.”
“Would you bet he would get impeached next year?” Matthews asked.
“I don’t know yet. I don’t know what the evidence will show,” Perez said.
After Matthews mentioned the “dozens and dozens of Democratic members” signing on for impeachment, Perez said, “One thing that is clear, this is the most incompetent and dangerous president in American history. And what I think my role is, as DNC chair, is to make sure we elect Democrats up and down the ticket so that we can make sure that this Trump era is a very short era.”
Despite the fact that Perez made that comment with a straight face after eight years of former President Obama, the likelihood of a Democratic landslide based on nothing more than Trump’s perceived “incompetence” seems like a stretch. Republicans, on the other hand, will have a booming economy and tax cuts to make their case to the American people using their very own pocketbooks.
Which is the more powerful? We’ll find out shortly!
