President Donald Trump’s first wife Ivana Trump said that her ex-husband is “definitely” not a racist Monday.
During an interview with “Good Morning Britain,” co-hosted by Piers Morgan, Ivana commented on remarks from the president that many commentators say betrays Trump’s racist worldview.
“Lot’s of stuff at the moment about Donald being a racist,” Morgan said. “Is he a racist, in your experience?”
“I don’t think Donald’s racist at all,” Ivana said. “You know sometimes he says the things, you know, which are silly, or he doesn’t really mean them or something like that, but he’s definitely — they’re not not racist I’m sure of that.”
Ivana continued to say that “there’s so many people telling him left and right what to say and what to not to say and things like that, and sometimes maybe get confusing.”
“I’ve known him a long time and in all the time I knew him, I never heard anything from him that I could ever construe as being racist,” Morgan said. “Some of his comments in recent weeks, particularly the weekend they did borderline racist, Ivana, whichever way you look at it they are inflammatory and they’re unpleasant.”
Trump allegedly referred to African countries as “shitholes” during a meeting with Republican and Democratic senators Thursday, according to people at the meeting or who were briefed on the meeting. Trump himself has denied that he used that term as it is being reported.
“No. I’m not a racist,” Trump said Sunday when reporters asked whether he held racist views. “I’m the least racist person you will ever interview.”
