Did he say it, or not?
Sen. Tom Cotton was adamant that he did not hear President Donald Trump use the derogatory term “sh*thole countries” in a private Oval Office meeting last week.
The latest controversy exploded when Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., claimed the president questioned why immigrants were being accepted from “sh*thole countries.”
Cotton was also at Thursday’s bipartisan meeting and he appeared Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” to say he didn’t hear Trump use the offending term.
Host John Dickerson played a clip of Sen. David Purdue, R-Ga., also saying Trump did not use the term in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, calling the claim that he did a “gross misrepresentation.”
“I didn’t hear that word either,” the Arkansas Republican told Dickerson, when asked to respond. “I certainly didn’t hear what Sen. Durbin has said repeatedly. Sen. Durbin has a history of misrepresenting what happens in White House meetings, so that should not come as a surprise.”
That history being the false assertion by Durbin in 2013 that a GOP House leader told President Obama that he could not stand to look at him.
“I didn’t hear it and I was sitting no further away from [President] Donald Trump than Dick Durbin was,” Cotton said, when Dickerson pressed for clarity.
When asked if Durbin was lying, Cotton reaffiremd that the Democrat has a history of misrepresenting the truth.
Also known as lying.
