James Woods, California’s next Governor? Movement to draft conservative firebrand picks up steam

Governor James Woods?

The actor and conservative firebrand has not announced any such plans but a group of California voters is not “taking no for an answer,” launching an online petition calling on Woods to run for the California governor’s seat.

“James Woods, governor of California? Why not? The Golden State has a long history of electing leaders from the deep end of thespian pool. From Ronald Reagan to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Californian voters actually seem to enjoy casting ballots for Republican actors,” the petition, launched Tuesday, reads.

“We are launching a campaign to convince Woods to run for Governor this year and won’t take no for an answer!” it continued.

Talk radio host and conservative activist Melanie Morgan is behind the effort to “shake up the California governor’s race.”

“The online signature-gathering effort intends to assist fed-up Californians in taking a stand against one-party rule and the increasing likelihood that two Democrats will appear on November’s gubernatorial ballot amid a Republican shutout,” the Marin County resident said, according to The Washington Times.

The former mayor of San Francisco, Newsom is currently serving as  lieutenant governor of California. Morgan points to a future political debate between Woods and the Democratic candidates likely to run for the seat held by incumbent Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has been in office since 2011.

“A debate between Newsom, Antonio Villaraigosa, Tom Steyer or any of the other left-wing Democrat wannabes ends very badly for anyone other than Woods?” Morgan wrote in the online petition. “And with likely Democratic Party nominee Gavin Newsom not appearing to give a damn about anything beyond naked political ambition, why not draft someone far more intelligent than any predecessor in that office?”

With over one million Twitter followers, Woods is a vocal supporter of President Trump and has no qualms eviscerating the left on social media – or elsewhere – with provocative and timely remarks.

“Californians deserve a choice in this year’s crucial election and it’s a mistake to allow Gavin Newsom to cakewalk right into the governorship without a fight,” Morgan said, according to Media Equalizer. “We think he (Woods) could out-debate Newsom and any other candidate hands-down.”

Woods may not have weighed in yet on his prospects for running, but he was very clear about all the brouhaha over the idea of Oprah Winfrey running for president in 2020.

The actor posted photos on Twitter of Winfrey with alleged sexual predator Harvey Weinstein, adding the hashtag #MadamPresident.
