GOP Congressman Ron DeSantis announced he is officially running for governor of Florida in the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, during a Friday “Fox and Friends” interview.
“A few weeks ago the president tweeted support for me as a candidate for governor of Florida, so today we are going to be filing the paperwork to begin that effort,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis stated his credentials as a military officer and “proven conservative,” while praising the work of outgoing Republican Gov. Rick Scott.
“As somebody who’s a military officer, Iraq veteran, a proven conservative — and then with the support of the president I’m in a position to exercise the leadership that can build on the great work that Governor Rick Scott has done to advance economic opportunity, reform education, and drain the swamp in Tallahassee. Which needs to be drained just like Washington,” he said.
DeSantis has been an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, defending him against media criticism and praising his job performance in the oval office.
DeSantis attributed support for his campaign to his “proven track record” in Congress, citing his work on the tax bill, his involvement in “holding Iran accountable,” and public support for an investigation into corruption at the Clinton Foundation.
“If you work hard and you do good things, I think people tend to notice that,” DeSantis concluded.
