If you thought President Trump’s response to Bannon was strong … Don Jr. goes into full-on assault mode

Donald Trump, Jr. has just tapped into the ring.

President Trump’s oldest son delivered a scathing multi-tweet rebuke of Breitbart chairman and former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, who accused him of being “treasonous” when he met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower during the 2016 election.

The younger Trump called Bannon an “opportunist” who is guilty of “backstabbing” and “leaking” information to the press.

“Steve had the honor of working in the White House & serving the country,” Trump wrote. “Unfortunately, he squandered that privilege & turned that opportunity into a nightmare of backstabbing, harassing, leaking, lying & undermining the President. Steve is not a strategist, he is an opportunist.”

Trump was reacting to Bannon’s quotes in the upcoming Michael Wolff book “Fire and Fury,” which gives an inside look at the Trump White House.

In the book, the former White House strategist made several critical remarks about President Trump’s family. Of the Trump Tower meeting, Bannon said:

“The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor – with no lawyers. They didn’t have any lawyers.

“Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s**t, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately.”

Trump defended himself against the accusation that he committed treason, sharing supportive tweets on his account.

The president’s son continued his attack on Bannon.

President Trump issued an official response to Bannon’s comments on Wednesday. The president distanced himself from the Breitbart head and said his contributions to the campaign and administration were minimal.

“Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was,” the statement read. “It is the only thing he does well. Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books.”

A number of prominent personalities joined Donald Trump, Jr. in censuring Bannon.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, a vocal supporter of the president, said “There’s two things you give to someone when you’re hired in a political context: you give them loyalty and you give them confidentiality.”

Fox News host Sean Hannity took a diplomatic approach, describing the media as “hyperventilating” and predicting the Trump-bannon feud “won’t be a news story” within two days.

In a spat this personal, taking the middle road is an incredible feat.
