A progressive Ohio Democrat running for Congress in 2018 wanted his constituents to know how sleazy his Republican opponent is, so he filmed an ad to tell the details while he whipped up some pancakes.
“I’m running for Congress here in Ohio to replace our current Congressman, Steve Stivers. Now, you might not have heard much about my opponent and that is sort of how he likes it,” Rick Neal, a former teacher and humanitarian worker, said in a campaign ad launched Monday.
“Mr. Stivers is the top political fundraiser for House Republicans. His job is to raise millions and millions of dollars from all those groups that control Washington,” Neal said.
Neal points out many of the groups Stivers targets to fill the GOP coffers, like “Wall Street banks” and “the oil industry.”
“He goes and votes for the stuff they want, like this tax bill they jammed through, which kicks millions of Americans off their health care, raises taxes on the middle class, gives huge tax breaks to corporations and billionaires and actually gives big companies an incentive to ship Ohio jobs overseas,” Neal said.
Neal is a former Peace Corps volunteer, international teacher and human rights advocate.
The main legislative goals on which Neal is running his campaign include pushing for Medicare-for-All, like Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont put forth in October 2017, and protecting “our public lands from the Trump administration’s efforts to hand them to private interests.”
Neal promises to refrain from taking money from Wall Street, lobbyists and special interests. He is also committed to not serving more than three terms.
“If you want to ask me questions, just email me,” Neal said. The Democratic candidate pledges to answer every email from viewers or concerned citizens.
