Harvard Prof. Dershowitz shreds media’s outrage over Trump saying there’s ‘no crime’ for Russia collusion

On Friday, the world was once again set ablaze by an off-the-cuff remark by President Trump that liberal pundits in the media couldn’t wrap their collective minds around: Collusion is not a “crime.”

This is what the president said, referring to Professor Dershowitz, in the explosive Times interview:

He’s been amazing. And he’s a liberal Democrat. I don’t know him. He’s a liberal Democrat. I watched Alan Dershowitz the other day, he said, No. 1, there is no collusion, No. 2, collusion is not a crime, but even if it was a crime, there was no collusion. And he said that very strongly. He said there was no collusion. And he has studied this thing very closely. I’ve seen him a number of times. There is no collusion, and even if there was, it’s not a crime. But there’s no collusion. I don’t even say [inaudible]. I don’t even go that far.

Once again, liberal attorney Alan Dershowitz made a media appearance to lay out these facts to a national audience. During a Thursday appearance on Your World With Neal Cavuto, Dershowitz spoke with guest host Trish Regan on what exactly would make “collusion” a real, instead of imagined, crime.

“Is collusion the wrong word?” Regan asked. “They haven’t come up with anything, and we probably would’ve heard it by now because they leak.”

“For it to be a crime, the campaign would’ve had to say to the Russians, look, we want you to hack into the Democratic National Committee,” said Dershowitz. “Here’s the names of the people. We’d like you to get information about them. That would be accessory before the crime with the hacking.”

The prominent attorney and Harvard professor then went on to explain why what the media is trying to portray as a crime may be “terrible politically,” but would have been perfectly legal if it had happened.

“But, just collusion. If the president and his campaign say to the Russians, look if you help me get elected, we will help you with sanctions, that would be terrible politically, but it simply wouldn’t be a crime. Before something can be a crime, you have to find a provision in the criminal code that makes it a crime. Maybe it could be a crime, but right now it’s not a crime.”

At least he’s consistent. Dershowitz would be “saying the same thing if Hillary Clinton had been elected and people were railing about her and saying lock her up, lock her up.”

“You have to find a specific crime,” said Dershowitz. “You can’t just make it up. Both sides are trying to politicize the criminal justice system.”

Watch the exchange below:

Despite the media’s outrage over President Trump’s denials of Russian collusion coupled with his insistence that, even so, collusion isn’t a crime per se, facts are facts. And to paraphrase a famous quote by conservative pundit Ben Shapiro, these particular facts don’t care about anyone’s feelings.
