While on the visit, the president met with a remarkable man: 1st Lt. Victor Prato of the 127th Airborne Engineer Battalion.
Lt. Prato suffered devastating injuries from an IED explosion that wounded him in Afghanistan last month. He was at Walter Reed hospital recovering from the terrible blast, when the president came by to bestow on him a small token of the nation’s gratitude: The Purple Heart.
“Some of the bravest people anywhere in the world,” the president said, echoing the thoughts of many. There are no words to imagine what soldiers who go to war go through and their challenges that they must face upon their return.
We owe the men and women American military so much for our freedom and safety, and it’s veterans like Lt. Prato who allow us to enjoy our lives and celebrate holidays with our loved ones. All the president can do, like so much of us, is to simply marvel.
“One of the most powerful moments of my life watching @POTUS give the Purple Heart to this American Hero,” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted. “Amazed by the strength and resilience of the men and women in our Armed Forces.”

The president also had time to spread some holiday cheer to other servicemen and veterans at Walter Reed.

Here, the president is making a few of our nation’s finest smile.

The president flashes a grin for a seasoned citizen with a smartphone.

The president took time out ahead of the holidays to do what presidents should: Show our brave fighting men and women a little bit of gratitude that they so much deserve.
As we unwrap our gifts on Christmas morning, it behooves us to remember men like Lt. Victor Prato, like President Trump did.
