Steve Schmidt goes on a tear against Fox News: Like ‘propaganda in authoritarian countries’

Republican strategist, Steve Schmidt, teed off on Sean Hannity and Fox News on Friday, likening them to state media.

Schmidt, who ran the day-to-day operations of Arizona Sen. John McCain’s failed 2008 presidential campaign, pulled no punches as he tore into the network after MSNBC host Nicole Wallace played a clip from Hannity’s show.

In the clip, Hannity referred to the anti-President Donald Trump text messages sent by two FBI agents to each other as “Watergate on steroids.”

““That Fox News panel––the breathtaking dishonesty of it is beyond my ability to articulate,” Schmidt said. “That is no longer a news organization. That is what American state media looks like. That is what White House-controlled in-the-service-of-the-president misinformation looks like. That is indistinct from propaganda in authoritarian countries. It is aimed directly at weakening essential institutions and misinforming the American people. It is appalling.”

The statement is rich in irony for a number of reasons.

For starters, Schmidt joins Wallace, Joe Scarborough and Evan McMullin, who was also on Friday’s panel, as the only type of Republicans allowed on the extremely biased MSNBC: never-Trumpers.

And Schmidt made the statement on MSNBC, which many believe acted as the state media wing of the Obama administration for eight years.

The network houses such far left voices as Al Sharpton, Rachel Maddow, Joy Ann Reid, Mika Brzezinski, Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell, who serve as the counters to Fox News pundits like Hannity and Tucker Carlson.

Fox News also has a counter of its own in progressive news anchor Shepard Smith and invites guests on every program to argue for the Democrat perspective.

But Wallace and her producers chose to cherry pick one clip in which Hannity and his panel expressed concerns about the impartiality of both the President Trump / Russia investigation and the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Concerns that have been echoed by many Americans.
