With friends like these, who needs enemies?
Elizabeth Warren, Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, rushed to the defense of her colleague New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand after her calls for the president’s resignation over sexual misconduct accusations ignited a Twitter feud with Trump.

Gillibrand responded with a defiant tweet that she would not be “silenced”:
You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office. https://t.co/UbQZqubXZv
— Kirsten Gillibrand (@SenGillibrand) December 12, 2017
It was Trump’s kicker — that Gillibrand begged for campaign contributions and “would do anything for them” — that ignited a thousand fiery retorts to the president. One of the fiercest came from Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski, who said the president’s remark “made her blood boil.”
Here is explicitly what many inferred from the president’s tweet:
If you don't find this offensive, then you need to give me a good explanation of what Trump means by "and would do anything to get them" here. https://t.co/9rKTqBLPYR

Don't even open the door to an explanation. It is horribly offensive, period. On the bright side, he just gave her an even larger platform to speak out from, which I'm sure she will use very wisely.

Not to be outdone, Senator Warren came to the defense of Gillibrand, and accidentally implied that she was a “slut”:
Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame @SenGillibrand? Do you know who you're picking a fight with? Good luck with that, @realDonaldTrump. Nevertheless, #shepersisted. https://t.co/mYJtBZfxiu
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) December 12, 2017
Plenty of people picked up on the implication:

uh i would say yes she is https://t.co/3TdqGCVUpa

This is the problem with PC cliches: They have a tendency to backfire if bandied about in a careless manner. If confronted, Warren would indisputably deny that’s what she meant, but the text points a different direction. “Slut shame” means the shaming of women who enjoy having sex.
Here is the issue with Trump’s tweet: He is the master of plausible deniability and can play the media like a violin maestro. Today is no different, and Senator Warren fell right into the trap. After a thousand times of the media launching full bore into an anti-Trump reaction based on perceived innuendo, you would think they’d have caught on by now.
