‘Half’ Christmas trees are leaving shoppers with their mouths hanging open – ridiculous or genius?

Artificial Christmas tree makers are causing a sensation with a surprising new design that offers half the tree – for sometimes double the price.

Sellers market half-trees as a convenient way of saving space in small living quarters. They have branches on only one side while the other side is completely bare.

This allows the tree to be set or even hung against a wall.

The design has been around for over a decade, but has only now started gaining traction.

Proponents claim people don’t see the back of a Christmas tree anyway. It’s a logical assertion, but observers are nevertheless taken aback by the half-tree’s slim appearance.

The British retailer Argos put it concisely:

“Half a tree might sound a bit odd, but bear with us, there’s a method in our madness. The half design allows you to sit it flush against the wall, so it’s perfect for small rooms. And when you don’t often see the back of the tree anyway, we think it’s a great compromise.”

This curious product might offer less tree, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to less money. A luxurious six-foot “flat back” tree from Balsam Hill costs $281 — down from the original price of $537.

Companies like Argos and Very carry more affordable trees, some for as low as $25.

Some shoppers have taken a liking to the unique design.

“Great buy fits in corner amazingly looks amazing,” one reviewer wrote.

Another customer found the half tree to be a “great looking tree that doesn’t take up much space. Our guests couldn’t even tell it was only half a tree until I pointed it out to them.”

But other buyers weren’t satisfied. One person found the tree’s appearance frail.

“I bought this tree after reading reviews but once I collected it and put it up to check all ok for Christmas’17 , I was extremely disappointed. It could really do with more branches as there is a lot of space between them a very skinny looking tree nothing like the full picture shows. I’m returning it to store and buying my tree elsewhere this year.”

And one reviewer noted that the tree “leans when all decs are on it and no way of altering it.”

The jury is still out on whether the half Christmas tree is ridiculous or genius. Perhaps it’s a bit of both.
