Just hours after announcing he won’t run for re-election, Democratic Rep. John Conyers hospitalized

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), the longest-serving member of Congress, has been hospitalized in Detroit. The news comes less than one day after deciding that he won’t run for re-election in 2018.

The cause of Conyers’ hospitalization? Stress. As WDIV-TV reports, citing Conyers consultant Sam Riddle:

“I just spoke with Monica Conyers on the phone and we want you to know that the congressman is resting comfortably in an area hospital. He’s doing OK, as well as he can be expected for a gentleman that’s approaching 90 years of age.”

A gentleman? That’s debatable.

Rep. Conyers has been deluged by sexual harassment allegations stemming from the signed affidavits of four women who worked with him. Among the accusations: Sexual comments, unwanted touching and massaging, and assigning staffers to transport women he was engaging in illicit liaisons with.

Conyers is married, unsurprisingly to a former staffer who was 36-years his younger when he wed her at age 61. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, his wife Monica was convicted of bribery and spent 27 months in federal prison in West Virginia. In 2015, she filed for divorce when the first wave of sexual harassment allegations hit, but they have since reconciled and renewed their vows.

Rep. Conyers recently enraged taxpayers when it was discovered that government money had been used in a “slush fund” to pay off sexual harassment accusers. Congress is currently exploring legislation to close this abuse of taxpayer funds.

The Michigan representative has the reputation of being a civil rights icon, and is a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus.

White House soon to replace Tillerson as Sec. of State, his replacement expected to be CIA Chief: Report

As the Democratic Rep. recovers in a Detroit hospital, his 53-year-legacy in shambles, it would do us well to bear in mind who the real victims of his legacy are; not just the alleged victims of his predatory behavior, but U.S. taxpayers.
