If the cliché “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” is true, then actress Debra Messing and President Trump are temporary besties.
Messing said she canceled her subscription to the New York Times after reading a fawning piece about conservative pundit Ben Shapiro. Trump has mocked the paper as the “Failing New York Times.”

“And why I cancelled my subscription to @nytimes,” Messing tweeted in response to an article entitled “Ben Shapiro, a Provocative ‘Gladiator,’ Battles to Win Young Conservatives.”
In her tweet, Messing referenced liberal writer Eric Boehlert, who slammed the Times’ “puff piece” about Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew.

“NYT writes puff piece on a former Breitbart bottom feeder,” Boehlert tweeted. “Number of critics, liberals, Dems quoted in piece: zero.”
Boehlert followed up by scoffing: “This is why Trump is president.”

If either Messing or Boehlert had read the New York Times article or knew anything about Ben Shapiro, they’d know that Shapiro is a vocal Trump critic who now despises Breitbart.
Shapiro, an establishment Republican, was a Never-Trumper who admitted he did not vote for Trump. So actually, Shapiro is not “the reason why Trump is president,” despite what liberal writers like Eric Boehlert claim.
The New York Times is lionizing Shapiro in an apparent attempt to stir up anti-Trump sentiment among Republicans and conservatives. The Times noted:
“Mr. Shapiro is trying to define conservatism at a time when its meaning is up for grabs and the Republican Party, and traditional conservative media outlets like Fox, are built for older audiences.
He does not like President Trump and he disagrees with his old boss at Breitbart News, Stephen K. Bannon, that Trumpism is the future of the Republican Party.”
Meanwhile, Debra Messing has repeatedly urged her followers to “resist Trump,” even through violence.
In February 2017, Messing stayed up all night to tweet her support for the violent protests at UC Berkeley, where rioters shut down an event featuring conservative firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos. “Resist, Never Stop!” Debra tweeted.
Messing egged on the rioters, who vandalized buildings, hurled smoke bombs, set fires, broke windows, and assaulted attendees (video below).
The irony that progressives gleefully silenced a gay Jewish man at Berkeley — the birthplace of the free speech movement — was obviously lost on Messing and the anarchists who support censorship over open debate.
Rioters said they were protesting Milo because he was a member of the “alt right” movement, even though Yiannopoulos has repeatedly disavowed the alt right.

Ironically, Milo was at the university to discuss free speech. Let that sink in.
