Former FBI Director James Comey took a shot at his former boss on Saturday after President Donald Trump fired at his own arch nemesis, CNN.
The president attacked the news network, particularly its international arm, in a tweet calling it “fake news.”
“@FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them!” the president tweeted.

Comey shot back with a lame tweet, citing a line in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to James Currie in 1786 on the subject of a free press.
“‘Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.’ – Thomas Jefferson, Jan. 28, 1786,” he tweeted.

Comey’s tweet came a half hour after the president’s and it is not the first time the former FBI director has passive-aggressively shot back at President Trump despite not mentioning his name.
In comments about the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election two weeks ago the president said that “Comey is proven now to be a liar and he is proven now to be a leaker.”
Comey responded, indirectly, on social media.
“‘If you want truth to go round the world you must hire an express train to pull it; but if you want a lie to go round the world, it will fly; it is light as a feather and a breath will carry it.’ Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1855).” he tweeted.

And while it is not the same as the president’s fire and fury approach, Comey, who only recently outed himself on Twitter, has used the medium in much the same way, by targeting his favorite enemy.
Comey was not the only one to defend CNN after the president’s tweet.
The network, and several of its personalities, defended themselves in a series of tweets.
