Retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake was caught on a hot mic bashing President Donald Trump, Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore and his own party.
“If we become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast,” the Arizona senator was caught saying to Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles.
The comment came at a tax reform event in Mesa, when Flake thought the microphone was not on.
Mayor Giles responded by calling President Trump an “idiot” and prodding Flake to run for president to take him out of office.
“I am not throwing smoke at you, but you are the guy — just for fun, think about how much fun it would be — just to be the foil, you know, and point out what an idiot this guy is,” he said. “Anyway, I hope you do it.”
Flake has been a frequent opponent of the president and excoriated him in his speech last month announcing that he would be retiring from the senate
It could be particularly damaging for Giles, a Republican mayor in a city that voted more than 53 percent for President Trump, which was more than the 49 percent he got in the entire state.
Neither Flake nor Giles have issued statements on what they said, nor has President Trump.
