With the media eager to take advantage of the opportunity to draw President Donald Trump into the discussion of sexually inappropriate behavior by U.S. Sen. Al Franken, leave it to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders to set them straight.
The president’s spokeswoman pointed out a “clear distinction” between the two men regarding claims leveled against both, noting that the Democratic senator from Minnesota confessed his guilt.
“I think in one case specifically Sen. Franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn’t,” Sanders said at Friday’s press briefing. “I think that’s a very clear distinction.”
Of course, Trump drew the media’s focus when he took to Twitter late Thursday to chastise Franken.
“The Al Frankenstien picture is really bad, speaks a thousand words. Where do his hands go in pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while she sleeps?” the president tweeted.

Franken, who now faces an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee, offered a mea culpa after Los Angeles TV and radio host Leeann Tweeden came forward to say he forcibly kissed and groped her during a 2006 USO tour in Iraq. She shared the now infamous photo of Franken grabbing her breasts while she was asleep.

“Coming from the world of comedy, I’ve told and written a lot of jokes that I once thought were funny but later came to realize were just plain offensive,” Franken said in a released statement. “But the intentions behind my actions aren’t the point at all. It’s the impact these jokes had on others that matters. And I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to come to terms with that.”
Following his lead of characterizing his behavior as “jokes” that have grown stale over the course of time, liberals were quick to engage in mental gymnastics to suggest that Franken “was just a comedian” at the time.
