Not only is the person who is responsible for insulting fellow citizens in a very public and ugly way a woman, she also has a quite a history.
A Fort Bend County, Texas woman stirred controversy with an anti-Trump sticker on her husband’s pickup truck reading “F**k Trump and f**k you for voting for him.”
After reaffirming her free speech rights when the local sheriff attempted to initiate a conversation with her, 46-year-old Karen Fonseca was arrested Thursday afternoon on an outstanding fraud warrant, CBS News reports.
Fonseca’s husband bailed her out of jail Thursday night for $1,500. She claims the anti-Trump sticker is the reason police targeted her for arrest.
“I’m almost certain it does have to do with (the truck decal),” she said upon being released from jail. “People abuse the badge, and in my opinion, money talks. When you’re in politics, people know how to work the system.”
But records show the grounds for her arrest go back from before the “decal” incident that thrust her into the spotlight. The fraud warrant was issued in August by the Rosenberg Police Department.
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department has not sought action over the sticker. Although Sheriff Troy Nehls threatened a disorderly conduct charge at one point, District Attorney John Healey it would most likely not be a prosecutable case.
Fonseca, a Trump detractor who takes issue with the President’s pledge to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, has described her situation as a struggle for free speech.
“It’s not to cause hate or animosity,” she said of the decal. “It’s just our freedom of speech and we’re exercising it.”
Fonseca’s story has earned her the support of the American Civil Liberties Union, a left-leaning organization that represents individuals and organizations in seemingly selective free speech-related lawsuits.
Prior to the revelation of Fonseca’s identity, Sheriff Nehls published a Facebook post seeking contact with the truck’s driver in the hopes of having a dialogue about the decal’s crude language–which had been the subject of numerous complaints.
“We have not threatened anybody with arrest,” the Sheriff said at a conference. “We have not written any citations. But I think now it would be a good time to have meaningful dialogue with that person and express the concerns out there regarding the language on the truck.”
Sheriff Nehls took down his original Facebook post after his family allegedly received numerous death threats.
