“Over 50 million taxpaying households will pay more taxes every April 15” under the House Republicans’ tax reform bill, Democratic Rep. Tony Cárdenas of California claimed Tuesday on the House floor.
An independent analysis of the Republicans’ Tax Cuts And Jobs Act indicates that Cárdenas’ claim drastically overstates the number of households that will experience a tax hike every year under the bill.
Numerous Democratic leaders have come out against the House Republicans’ tax reform bill on the grounds that it provides tax relief to many upper-class taxpayers, while raising taxes on some lower- and middle-class Americans. Cárdenas echoed these criticisms by claiming the bill would raise taxes on “over 50 million” households every year.
Less than 13 million “tax units,” or households, would experience a tax hike under the House bill in 2018, estimates the Tax Policy Center (TPC), a left-leaning think tank.
By comparison, the TPC estimates over 133 million households would see a tax cut in 2018.
The number of taxpaying households experiencing a tax hike “every April 15” over the next decade would increase due to population growth and the expiration of temporary provisions in the bill.
But even factoring these considerations in, TPC figures still do not substantiate Cárdenas’ “over 50 million” claim – just under 48 million households would experience a tax raise under the bill in 2027 based on TPC data tables.
In comparison, TPC estimates that over 110 million taxpaying households would benefit from a tax cut under the bill in 2027.
The Daily Caller News Foundation could not find an analysis that substantiates Cárdenas’ claim that the tax bill would raise taxes for “over 50 million” households “every April 15.”
Cárdenas’ office did not respond to a request for comment.
