Los Angeles Times columnist David Horsey attacked White House press secretary Sarah Sanders this week, saying she was “the right mouthpiece for a truth-twisting president.”
But the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and cartoonist crossed all lines of decency when he denigrated Sanders for her appearance, describing her as a “slightly chunky soccer mom.”
Proving that not even a liberal columnist can get away with that in today’s culture, he would later retract the offending paragraphs.
“I want to apologize to Times readers — and to Sarah Huckabee Sanders — for a description that was insensitive and failed to meet the standards of our newspaper,” Horsey wrote, after removing the offensive description.
Horsey began the piece by noting that Sanders “does not look like the kind of woman Donald Trump would choose as his chief spokesperson.”
“Much like Roger Ailes when he was stocking the Fox News lineup with blond Barbie dolls in short, tight skirts, the president has generally exhibited a preference for sleek beauties with long legs and stiletto heels to represent his interests and act as his arm candy,” Horsey wrote.
“Trump’s daughter Ivanka and wife Melania are the apotheosis of this type,” he added. “By comparison, Sanders looks more like a slightly chunky soccer mom who organizes snacks for the kids’ games.”

In addition to her role as the president’s spokewoman, Sanders, 35, is also the mother of three small children.
Horsey doubled down on his criticism of Sanders’ looks with a “Big Mother” cartoon that depicted a fascist-looking Sanders at the podium — the cartoon was left standing:

The no-nonsense Sanders does not suffer fools lightly during the daily press briefings, so it’s not surprising that the media is not too fond of her.
Either way, Horsey was lit up on social media, deservedly so… here’s a sampling of the responses from Twitter:

Ah, yes. Elitist, mom-mocking, fat-shaming lib cartoonist @davidhorsey formerly of the Seattle P-I. Knew him & his ilk too well during my Emerald City tour of duty. This is the kind of progressive journalist who wins multiple Pulitzer Prizes. Pat yourselves on the back==> https://t.co/BDiWTkJIsD
