‘What a joke!’ Obama scolds Trump for being the kind of president to use ‘politics of division’

Time away from the White House has apparently not helped former President Barack Obama become more self-aware.

At a New Jersey campaign event Thursday for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy, Obama told his party it is time for “rejecting a politics of division.”

In his first time stepping back into the political spotlight since vacating the White House in January, Obama spoke to the crowd at a Newark hotel as he campaigned for his former ambassador to Germany.

“You are going to send a message to the country, and you will send a message to the world that we are rejecting a politics of division,” Obama said. “We are rejecting a politics of fear. We are embracing a politics that says everybody counts.”

Though he never mentioned President Trump by name, Obama’s thinly veiled jabs at the president were pretty obvious.

“What we can’t have is the same old politics of division that we have seen so many times before that dates back centuries,” Obama continued.

“Some of the politics we see now, we thought we put that to bed,” he added.  “That’s folks looking 50 years back. It’s the 21st century, not the 19th century, come on.”

Murphy is running against Republican Kim Guadagno, currently New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s lieutenant governor.

“Phil Murphy is the one who will divide New Jersey,” Guadagno’s spokesman, Ricky Diaz, said according to The Washington Post. Diaz warned the Democratic candidate will raise the state’s taxes to a level that “only the über rich like him will be able to afford to live here.”

Obama made another campaign stop in Richmond, Virginia, in support of Democrat Ralph Northam, the state’s lieutenant governor, who is running against former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie for governor.

“We’ve got folks who are deliberately trying to make folks angry, to demonize people who have different ideas, to get the base all riled up because it provides a short-term tactical advantage. Sometimes that feels frustrating,” he told the crowd in Virginia, CNBC reported.

Obama’s disturbing lack of self-awareness provided an unwanted bit of nostalgia for many on social media.
