First Lady Melania Trump has taken a rare aggressive stance following a highly-publicized interview of Donald Trump’s ex-wife Ivana, in which she referred to herself at the “First Lady.”
Ivana Trump, who was married to Donald from 1977 to 1992 and is the mother of the President’s three oldest children, appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to promote her new book, Raising Trump–a look at her life raising Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka.
During the interview, Ivana discussed having a “direct number” to the White House, but choosing not to contact Trump through that line in order to avoid provoking “jealousy” from Melania.
She went on to say “I’m basically first Trump wife. I’m First Lady, okay?”

The First Lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, quickly released a statement on Monday denouncing Ivana Trump’s remarks as “attention seeking and self-serving noise,” as reported by the Washington Examiner.

The statement from the First Lady’s office refers both to Ivana Trump’s book and Melania’s upcoming visit on Tuesday to a West Virginia drug treatment center for infants exposed to addictive substances during their mother’s pregnancy.

Ivana Trump has previously said she is not interested in being First Lady, but would like to be “First Mother,” and suggested her daughter Ivanka’s run for President in the future.
Donald and Ivana Trump divorced in 1992 amid rumors he cheated on her with model Marla Maples, whom he later married and with whom he has a daughter, Tiffany Trump.
Despite the divorce, President Trump and Ivana have maintained a good relationship over the years, with Trump calling offering praise for his ex-wife’s parenting skills.
