Issa Rae, the creator and star of the black-centric HBO series “Insecure,” said she was rooting only for black people to win at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
“I’m rooting for everybody black!” Rae told Variety on the red carpet (see video below). “I am!”
If Rae wants an awards show that only rewards blacks, she should stick to the BET Awards or the NAACP Image Awards. Otherwise, sit down.

Not surprisingly, Rae’s racist comment fueled backlash on social media, with many asking what would’ve been the reaction if a white actress had said she was only rooting for whites.
Rae’s HBO series “Insecure,” whose cast is mostly black, was not nominated for an Emmy. Perhaps that’s why Issa sounds so bitter?

The show, which debuted in October 2016, garnered a little more than 1 million viewers despite having one of the best lead-offs on television. On Sunday nights, “Insecure” followed ratings juggernaut “Game of Thrones,” whose season 7 premiere drew 16 million viewers.

Meanwhile, a number of blacks scooped up Emmy Awards this year, including:
Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series
–Donald Glover, “Atlanta” (black)
Outstanding lead actor in a drama series
–Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us” (black)
Outstanding directing for a comedy series
–Donald Glover, “Atlanta” (black)
Outstanding lead actor in a limited series
–Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of” (first Muslim to win an acting Emmy)
Outstanding writing for a comedy series
–Aziz Ansari (Muslim-raised) and Lena Waithe (black) “Master of None”
Do you see any Asian-American winners on the list? What about Latinos or Native Americans? When was the last time anyone from these groups won an Emmy?
Do you hear us bitching? And some groups don’t even have “their own” awards show like the BET Awards. It’s not that serious, it’s just fluff. So take several seats, Issa, and enjoy your privileged life.
True trailblazers like Oprah Winfrey, Diana Ross, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington don’t demand recognition because of their skin color, or to fill a quota in the name of political correctness. They let their talent speak for them.

Many on Twitter (including many blacks) trashed Issa Rae for her racist comment. It just wasn’t necessary.
The most talented people should win, not those with certain skin colors

Isn’t that racist? Just asking. There are a lot of blacks that have won. What is the problem? One of the richest in the USA is Oprah=black

But God forbid a white person say they’re rooting for all white people…racist much?!
— Jenn Henry (@j_nicole86) September 17, 2017
Maybe if they were better actors they’d get more awards..race has NOTHING to do with it. ??
— Jenn Henry (@j_nicole86) September 17, 2017
Id like to hear a white actress say that
— Dawid Delamancha (@delamanchad) September 17, 2017
When she said “I’m rooting for everybody black”, clearly stating that she hope black people win. Not the best performers

She is saying that she doesn’t care if the black actor/actress is any good or not, she’s rooting for them regardless. Simple. Racist

Talk about racist! You are one!

A defiant Rae clapped back, saying anyone who criticized her needs help. Projecting much, Issa?
THANK YOU to all of you who tuned in/tweeted about the show/wrote a thinkpiece/cussed me out/fucked raw because you needed guidance…
