A North Carolina man tried to escape from police by leaping into the ocean, but he came dangerously close to being shark bait.
The man, Zachary Kingsbury, 20, was stopped by police on Wednesday afternoon when police spotted illegal contraband in his car, WECT reported.
When authorities asked him to step out of his vehicle, Kingsbury had other ideas.
He dove into the ocean and started to swim, leading authorities on a standoff that lasted for hours, according to WECT.
Kingsbury swam 4,000 feet from shore within hours, prompting the Surf City Police Department to enlist a drone to track him.
“At that point, the operation became a rescue operation,” Surf City police said in a statement.
As the police were attempting to rescue Kingsbury they noticed a potentially dangerous visitor. A shark swimming nearby.
Police managed to arrest Kingsbury before he became the shark’s dinner and was charged with possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest.
