The radical left wing group Antifa is now officially known as “domestic terrorists.”
While both establishment Democrats and Republicans were relcutant to denounce the violent movement, the Department of Homeland Security had already formally classified Antifa activities as “domestic terrorist violence,” according to confidential law enforcement documents and interviews obtained by Politico.
Authorities have warned state and local officials of an increase in violent attacks by the “extremist” collective since 2016 including attacks on government institutions, police and symbols of “the capitalist system,” according to Politico.

The FBI and DHS were also concerned that the group would bomb one, or both, of the Repblican and Democrat conventions last year.
The groups members spend weeks planning its violent attacks, according to a joint report by DHS and the FBI in April 2016, yet news of the information is just surfacing now.

In that same report the DHS and FBI warned of an increase in Antifa violence if “fascist, nationalist, racist or anti-immigrant parties obtain greater prominence or local political power in the United States, leading to anti-racist violent backlash from anarchist extremists.”
“It was in that period [as the Trump campaign emerged] that we really became aware of them,” a senior law enforcement official told Politico. “These antifa guys were showing up with weapons, shields and bike helmets and just beating the shit out of people. … They’re using Molotov cocktails, they’re starting fires, they’re throwing bombs and smashing windows.”

“Both the racists and a segment of violent Antifa counter-protestors are amped for battle in an escalating arms race, where police departments are outmaneuvered, resulting in increasingly violent dangerous confrontations,” Brian Levin, a former New York City police officer, told Politico. “It’s an orchestrated dance. The rallies spill over into social media and then even more people show up at the next rally primed for violent confrontation.”
The Politico report further stated that some Antifa members travelled to the Republic of Turkey to train with like minded organizations.
