A toddler clinging to its dead mother was pulled from the flood waters of Houston by rescuers after the woman attempted to get the child to safety.
The woman, in a futile attempt to save herself and her child from the historic flooding, got her car stuck in a flooded office parking lot on Tuesday, Beaumont Fire-Rescue Capt. Brad Penisson, told reporters.
Witnesses told authorities that they noticed the woman grabbing her 18-month-old daughter and walking through the water, when a current dragged her and her toddler away, the Associated Press reported.
Rescuers found the girl a half mile downstream, holding on to her mother’s floating body.
The police and rescuers pulled the baby and the woman onto the boat and attempted to resuscitate the mother, to no avail, according to AP.
They grabbed the baby right before they would have floated under a railroad trestle where the rescuers could not have followed.
The child is in stable condition in the hospital, according to Penisson.
