‘I’m lucky to be alive’: The Go-Go’s Belinda Carlisle, 59, opens up on 30 years of addiction and her rock bottom

After battling cocaine and alcohol addiction, Belinda Carlisle of the 80s girl group The Go-Go’s admits she is ‘lucky’ to be alive.

Carlisle acknowledged this week that beginning in 2005, she took her son, James, to rehab with her after learning that addiction can be “genetic.”

Her goal was for James, who would have been 13-years-old at the time, to learn about drug addiction… which may be the first ever case of proactive drug rehab, occurring BEFORE drug addiction sets in.

“He felt it was good for him to understand the nature of the beast,” she said during an appearance on the the British panel show, “Loose Women.”

Carlisle said in addition to being lucky to be alive, she was fortunate that the drug abuse that began when she was just 14-years-old,  didn’t harm her appearance — see nose.

“I think you need to hit some kind of bottom,” she said. “It was secrets and lies all of the time. 13 years ago it was a choice of life or death. Being in your mid 40s as a drug addict is not good.”

“I’m not in jail and I’m alive, it could be any of us.”

“I should look like the Phantom of the Opera,” she joked.

The Go-Gos lead singer said her battle with drug addiction came down to a matter of “life or death.”

Sober since 2005, Carlisle said she has a healthier lifestyle now and takes “everything in moderation.”

The recording artist also spoke about learning her son is gay and dealing with that “shock.”
