Bakers refused to make Trump birthday cake for young ‘Pickle’…these are the rules?

But they have to bake the cake… “those are the rules progressives gave us.”

The mother of the young boy whose letter was read aloud during a White House press briefing had to fall back on her own talents to fulfill her son’s birthday wish to have a Donald Trump cake.

…because she could not find a baker willing to make it.

The 9-year-old boy who goes by “Pickle,” later identified as Dylan Harbin, after a crack Washington Post investigative effort tracked him down to verify that he truly existed, asked for a Trump-themed birthday party.

The Post noted in its article that to get the cake Dylan wanted, his mother “made him one herself because she couldn’t find a bakery willing and able to do it.”

All of which brings to mind the Colorado baker who was sued by a gay couple after refusing to make them a wedding cake.

Michael P. Farris is president, CEO and general counsel of the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Christian legal group defending Jack Phillips, a Colorado baker who was sued by a gay couple for declining to make their same-sex wedding cake.

Mr. Farris wondered why bakers are allowed to decline to make birthday cakes supporting Mr. Trump, but not wedding cakes supporting same-sex marriage.

“Similarly here, cake shops declined Pickle’s order for conscience reasons,” Mr. Farris wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “Yet, no one on the Left is calling for legal action against the cake shops. And neither should anyone on the Right.”

 

Farris goes on to answer his own question, noting that “cake shops have freedom of speech.”

He added: “They have the right to decline to use their artistic talents to celebrate events or promote messages that violate their beliefs, even if it offends a nice little kid.”

…or a gay couple.

Or so we thought, but as Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings said of the left during the push to pass Obamacare, “All this talk about rules, we make ’em up as we go along.”

However, as conservative political commentator Dana Loesch sarcastically noted, “[T]hey have to be forced to make the cake or they lose their business. Those are the rules progressives gave us.”
