Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch used a fake name while emailing about official government business.
Lynch, who served as AG for the Obama administration, used the name “Elizabeth Carlisle” in emails with Department of Justice press people to discuss what talking points to use with the media regarding her meeting with former President Bill Clinton while his wife was under investigation, the Daily Caller reported.
Lynch met the former president on the tarmac in Arizona during the investigation, which prompted lawsuits by the American Center for Law and Justice and Judicial Watch for records and documents about the meeting, in which Lynch’s email pseudonym was found.
The emails show that Justice Department officials scrambled to develop talking points about the Lynch / Clinton meeting after an ABC affiliate in Phoenix inquired about it.
Lynch’s “Elizabeth Carlisle” email address was included in those emails.
Robert Raben, Lynch’s attorney, told the Daily Caller that they account did, in fact, belong to the former attorney general, but that there was nothing untoward about it.
“That address was and is known to the individuals who process [Freedom of Information Act] requests; the practice, similar to using initials or numbers in an email, helps guard against security risks and prevent inundation of mailboxes,” he said.
It was a similar excuse to the one used by her predecessor, Eric Holder, when he said preventing an overflowing email inbox was one of the reasons he used a fake name in some of his emails.
Reddit users came up with the theory that that Lynch’s email address was named for her maternal grandmother, who they claim was named Lizzie Carlisle Harris.
Others postulated that her use of the email pseudonym was illegal, but that is incorrect.
The address still resided on official government servers.
But Lynch conspicuously left out the fact that she had the email address, or that she was using an alias, when she spoke to Rep. Trey Gowdy when he questioned her in 2016.
“So you use official email to conduct official business?” he asked at the time.
“Yes sir. I do,” she replied.
Was Elizabeth Carlisle her official email?
It would be an interesting question to ask her if Congress ever gets her back under oath.
