The Fox News Channel responded to a New York Times request for an apology after a “Fox & Friends” segment reported the newspaper foiled a plan to kill Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
…but it wasn’t the apology the Gray Lady was awaiting.
Instead, Fox News rebuked The Times for what it called a “malicious and inaccurate segment,” saying it’s “beyond disappointing” that they are being blamed in an attempt to distract from The Times publishing the name of a C.I.A. official last month.
“Neither FOX News’ report nor the subsequent on-air coverage was inaccurate,” the network said in a statement provided to BPR. “We find it beyond disappointing that the New York Times, in an attempt to distract from their recent debacle, decided to blame FOX News for comments made publicly by General Thomas during a widely viewed panel at the Aspen Security Forum.”
Not that Fox News was above offering the newspaper a little guidance.
“It might behoove the Times to actually check in with their reporter Eric Schmitt to see whether Gen. Thomas’ comments have merit and whether Schmitt’s reporting in 2015 revealed intelligence that allowed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to slip away,” the statement added.
Ouch… The Times may think twice before demanding another apology!
The segment in question, aired Saturday morning, featured comments from General Raymond Thomas, who said an article in The Times on intelligence agencies having “extracted valuable information” led to al-Baghdadi escaping.
