Blind WWII vet, 92, attacked protecting his American flag: ‘I’d like to whoop them good with my crutch’

A cowardly thug injured a 92-year-old World War II veteran in an attempted American flag theft.

The man, Howard Banks of Kaufman, Texas, told CBS DFW that he heard some noise and, knowing that his flag has been stolen before, went outside to investigate.

“I walked out, hanging onto the railing and stepped down. That must’ve startled them,” he said.

“They could see me. I couldn’t see them. I turned and looked in the other direction, and about then – ‘wham!’ They knocked me down,” Banks, who is legally blind, said.

The thug ran off, leaving the flag behind, as neighbors rushed in to help the elderly man who suffered a twisted ankle.

But the hooligan did manage to fling a “God Bless All Police” sign across his lawn.

“It’s the one thing I can cling to. Yet at my capacity, there’s not much I can do. But I can honor our flag,” Banks, who said he salutes the flag daily, told CBS DFW.

Banks told CBS DFW that his flags have been vandalized before, with his American flag shredded and his U.S. Marine flag flung into a ditch.

Kaufman police said they are looking for the perpetrator of the crime.

“We are doing everything in our power to find the suspects that committed this cowardly assault and bring them to justice,” the department told CBS DFW.

“This gentleman is a hero to our officers and the city’s residents should be extremely proud to have him as part of our community,” it said.

But Banks would prefer to administer his own justice to the thug.

“If there’s any way to catch them and I was able to do so, I’d like to whoop them good with my crutch.'” he said.
