On Wednesday evening, the tragic news broke that Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer. According to tests conducted by the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, the Arizona senator has “a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma.”
On Fox News’ The Five, Dr. Marc Siegal compared McCain’s case to former President Jimmy Carter, who had been diagnosed with brain cancer and is now cancer free. Unfortunately, McCain’s cancer is a different type. “I have to tell you this is a really tough one,” Siegal said, adding that the next steps are “chemotherapy and radiation” and possible “experimental treatments.”
However, “If anyone is going to beat this, it’s him,” Siegal said. But he also doesn’t expect the senator to be back to work anytime soon.
Whether you love or hate his politics, it’s impossible to deny that the Arizona senator and former POW is a great American, and one tough cookie. Needless to say, luminaries all over expressed their well-wishes.
In a statement, President Trump said, “Senator John McCain has always been a fighter. Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon.”
Former President George H.W. Bush said in a statement: “The Hanoi Hilton couldn’t break John McCain’s spirit many years ago, so Barbara and I know — with confidence — he and his family will meet this latest battle in his singular life of service with courage and determination.”
