AG Sessions announces ‘largest medical fraud takedown in American history’

Another promise kept?

One of the many challenges the Donald Trump administration promised to tackle was the growing abuse of opioid prescriptions in the United States, and progress has now been made in that area.

Just because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from investigations centered on an alleged Trump-Russian campaign conspiracy — the issue driving media and Democratic hysteria — didn’t mean he was left sitting on his hands.

Sessions announced the “largest health care fraud takedown operation in American history” Thursday, in which 412 people have been arrested and charged with fraud and opioid scams scams totaling $1.3 billion in false billing, according to The Associated Press.

He added that medical professionals were among those arrested, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists who “have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients.”

The AP reported:

Among those charged are six Michigan doctors accused of a scheme to prescribe unnecessary opioids. A Florida rehab facility is alleged to have recruited addicts with gift cards and visits to strip clubs, leading to $58 million in false treatments and tests.

Officials said those charged in the schemes include more than 120 people involved in illegally prescribing and distributing narcotic painkillers. Such prescription opioids are behind the deadliest drug overdose epidemic in U.S. history. More than 52,000 Americans died of overdoses in 2015 — a record — and experts believe the numbers have continued to rise.

“In some cases, we had addicts packed into standing-room-only waiting rooms, waiting for these prescriptions,” acting FBI director Andrew McCabe said. “They are a death sentence, plain and simple.”

Sessions added that as a result of the crackdown, almost 300 health care providers have been suspended if not banned outright from participating in federal health care programs.

“They seem oblivious to the disastrous consequences of their greed. Their actions not only enrich themselves, often at the expense of taxpayers, but also feed addictions and cause addictions to start,” Sessions said.

Although the opioid epidemic has has been growing for a long time, some believed that Obamacare gave it a leg up.

During a recent appearance on “Fox & Friends,” first daughter Ivanka Trump addressed the many problems facing her father’s administration.

“Difficult is, you know, the mother who has lost a child to opioid abuse,” she said. “So these are the real challenges.”

And that challenge is being met.
