Chris Christie gets called a ‘fat-ass’ and a ‘bully’ on live radio, but he wasn’t about to take it lying down

On Monday, Chris Christie took a break from the beach to fill in for host Mike Francesa on the CBS New York sports radio station WFAN. If the New Jersey governor thought his on-air time would be full of fun conversations about sports, he had another thing coming when frequent station caller “Mike from Montclair” got personal, and fast.

“Governor, next time you want to sit on a beach that is closed to the entire world except you, you put your fat ass in a car and go to one that’s open to all your constituents, not just you and yours” said Mike.

‘Aren’t you embarrassed?’ Kellyanne and Chris Cuomo go at it for 30 minutes and every bit of it is explosive

“Interesting, Mike,” Christie responded.

“What’s that, Gov?!” Mike asked.

“You know, Mike,” said Christie. “I love getting calls from communists in Montclair.”

“You’re a bully, Governor, and I don’t like bullies!” Mike said.

“Hey, hold on Mike, I’m not the guy who came on the air, swore on the air… You’re swearing on the air, Mike. You’re a bum!” responded Christie.

“You know what, Mike, what matters is what you do.”

When Mike asked what Christie has done, the governor responded: “What I just did is stop polluting the airwaves with a guy like you!” seemingly after hanging up on Mike.

The show then went to a discussion about Christie’s lack of popularity in Montclair, an area he lost even during a landslide victory in 2014.

Christie is reportedly in the running to replace the retiring Francesa, dubbed the “Sports Pope” by fans of the show. When asked in May about the possibility of the governor replacing him, Francesa told The Ringer: “There’s a couple of things he’s going to have to deal with. Number one, his favorability numbers right now are really bad. … A lot of people don’t like him. I mean, really a lot of people. So he’s got to change that. Number two, if you really are passionate about the games and you love the games, it’s a job you can do. But it’s got to be a lifestyle. … If you’re not going to watch the ballgames, if you’re not going to go to the ballgames, if you don’t like to do that … you’re going to have trouble coming in here on Monday.”

Does Christie have a heart for the job? It will depend on how thick-skinned he is. As far as being a “fat-ass,” Christie showed back in 2014’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner that he definitely has a sense of humor and knows how to roll with the punches.

And as his Monday confrontation with “Mike” attests, he certainly can give it back!
