Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has got something special in store for ‘Shark Week’

The official launch into summer signals more people hitting the beaches and, of course, Discovery Channel’s annual “Shark Week.”

This year the summertime television event is back with a special featured guest: Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

“The most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps makes a splash with the most interesting race of his career, and gets schooled on everything ‘shark’ at the Bimini Shark Lab,” Discovery Channel announced in a press release, Thursday.

The Olympic legend will be going head to head, figuratively speaking, with a Great White shark, kicking off the week-long event on Discovery.

“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!” the press release stated.

Phelps may be a highly decorated athlete but will his speed stand up to beach-goers’ most feared ocean creature? Back in his career prime, Phelps was listed as the fasted swimmer by ESPN in 2010, clocked at 6 mph.

The Olympian will kick off “Shark Week” and close it out on the last day with “Shark school.”

“Michael Phelps joins Doc Gruber and Tristan Guttridge of the Bimini Shark Lab to get a crash course on everything ‘shark.’ They’ll dispel the myths and common misconceptions, teach him how to safely dive with sharks – including how to stay calm when a hammerhead swims two feet above his face – and will get Michael Phelps up close and personal with the incredible power of a great white,” the channel announced.
