Spiteful Al Franken uses entire chapter to slam Ted Cruz in new book, but Cruz comes back swinging

Minnesota Democratic Senator Al Franken’s ironically titled new book, “Al Franken: Giant of the Senate,” includes an entire chapter dedicated to slamming his colleague on the other side of the aisle, Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

And Cruz isn’t amused.

“Al is trying to sell books and apparently he’s decided that being obnoxious and insulting me is good for causing liberals to buy his books,” Cruz told Politico in an interview, adding, “I wish him all the best.”

On Tuesday, during an interview promoting his book, the Minnesota senator said that he “hate[s] Ted Cruz” and in fact dedicated an entire chapter called “Sophistry” to Cruz, wherein he described the Texas senator as “singularly dishonest and swarmy.”

Franken’s reported excuse for breaking Senate protocol by dishing on his interactions with Cruz is because the Texas Republican did something similar by calling out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for telling a “lie” on the Senate floor.

Relations between the two senators have been chilly to say the least. In January, Cruz called Franken out for his treatment of then-fellow-Senator Jeff Sessions during his Attorney General confirmation hearings. Cruz said of Franken at the time, “It is unfortunate to see members of this body impugn the integrity of a fellow senator [Sessions] with whom we have served for years. It is particularly unfortunate when that attempt is not backed up by fact.”
