The world’s third penis transplant was a success except for one detail.
The recipient is black, but his new appendage is white, the Daily Mail reported.
In order to fix the disconcerting disparity the 40-year-old patient will have his penis tattooed later this year, according to the South African surgeons that performed the procedure.
“The patient is black, and the donor was white,” Professor AndrĂ© van der Merwe, who led the operation, said.
“We have very few donors for this transplant procedure. But that is the only issue left.
“The man had been in relationships before, but whenever the question of sex arose, he bailed out. That will no longer be a problem.
“He had been suffering with depression beforehand, and was even suicidal.”
The man needed the transplant due to complications from a routine circumcision, according to the Mail.
He is doing well since the procedure.
“He is certainly one of the happiest patients we have seen in our ward. He is doing remarkably well. There are no signs of rejection and all the reconnected structures seem to be healing well,” he said.
Massachusetts medical tattoo artist Rosemarie Andlauer said coloring light skin darker is not uncommon but the procedure would take time.
“Even if the client was comfortable having it done in one session, because of the area I wouldn’t feel safe having the entire penis healing at once,” she said.
“I would not tattoo all the way around. I would do lengthwise, probably one-third at a time. I would allow healing in between each session. This would take a little longer but remaining healthy and safe is too important to rush.”
Since the surgery the man is able to get an erection, and will be able to have sex and urinate within the next six months.
