Three teenagers, including a former high school quarterback, face murder charges after the body of a six-year-old child they kidnapped was discovered.
Byron McBride,19, D’Allen Washington 17, and Dwan Wakefield, 17 were arrested and charged with capital murder after the three allegedly stole a car with the child, Kingston Frazier, inside, the Associated Press reported.
Frazier’s mother, Ebony Archie, left the Toyota Camry running while she ran inside a Kroger market in Jackson, Miss. And when she came back the vehicle, and child, were both gone, according to authorities.
Security video showed that while Archie was not with her vehicle, another car drove up and a man got out and stole her car.
“She feels guilty for the fact that she decided to go inside the store and leave the car running when she went inside the store,” her uncle, David Archie, told WLBT-TV.
It didn’t take long for one of the teens, Wakefield, to implicate the shooter.
He told authorities it was McBride who stole the car and shot Frazier.
“During this interview, Wakefield implicated Byron McBride as the person who actually stole the vehicle and shot and killed Frazier,” Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Rusty Clark said in a statement filed in connection with the case.
Investigators don’t believe there was any type of conspiracy to murder the child.
“I do not believe that it is anything other than a crime of opportunity,” Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest said at a press conference.
Family members told reporters on Friday that Archie picked up Frazier from his grandparent’s house after spending the evening celebrating her birthday.
She ran into the store to purchase party supplies to celebrate Frazier’s kindergarten graduation which was set for Friday, they said.
“A 6-year-old is gone,” the child’s cousin, Kolby Irby, told ABC 6. “His mother has to deal with this. That’s her baby.”
