A Huffington Post reporter taught himself an embarrassing yet funny lesson about not texting and driving
Matt Fuller thought he was sending his cousin a birthday message on Friday while he was driving. Once he pressed send it was too late to retrieve the “Happy Birthday sh**head” that was on its way to former Republican Congressman Tim Huelskamp.
You haven’t lived until you’ve tried texting your cousin a crude bday message while driving and accidentally texted a former Congressman. pic.twitter.com/jKHQc25EOi
— Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) May 19, 2017
Mortified, the journalist posted the message on Twitter, along with a word of advice.
@MEPFuller this’ll make a great PSA for not texting and driving.

@MadiLAlexander Don’t text and drive — or you might end up texting something crude to a former Congressman who definitely doesn’t appreciate crude language.

Even worse, Fuller got a response from the former Kansas politician.
Thankfully, Huelskamp appeared to have a sense of humor about it but asked the congressional correspondent to keep his reply “off-the-record.”
Update: I won’t text and drive anymore, and Huelskamp’s response was perfect (and off-the-record).
— Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) May 19, 2017
Huelskamp, who lost a re-lection bid in the 2016 Republican primary, relented and told Fuller he could share the response, which he did with a screenshot of the message.
Alright. Huelskamp has given me permission to post his response.
(I don’t actually have a cousin named Tim. Not sure how this happened.) pic.twitter.com/IBMvuyBvnq

“Thought maybe it was Boehner drunk again,” was Huelskamp’s reply, referring to former Speaker of the House John Boehner who served as the GOP leader during Huelskamp’s first four-year term in Congress.
@MEPFuller As a former huelskamp staffer of 6 years… classic response from him. Made my day.

@MEPFuller You and the former Congressman win Twitter today

Responses to Fuller’s hilarious gaffe and Huelskamp’s response flooded Twitter. Even White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway noticed.

@MEPFuller Glorious.

@MEPFuller This wasn’t actually a mistake, was it, Matt

@MEPFuller Happy birthday to your cousin from all of us ?

Fuller offered up an added thought a few minutes later.
The comment set off a series of negative responses which may have prompted Fuller to delete the tweet.
@MEPFuller You tweeted without context, in a serious tone, and shifted blame to readers because we cannot read your mind?
— Torbjorn Borg (@fiddlecub) May 19, 2017
@MEPFuller But why did you tweet that? Do you think we’re too mean to them? Do you think we don’t understand they are people? Why did you tweet that?
— joeyNorty (@NortyJoey) May 19, 2017
@MEPFuller Your point was irrelevant. You’re not supposed to care if they’re “nice people.” Your job is to go through their garbage. Go back to work.
— Seth Edenbaum (@ComradeVeidt) May 19, 2017
@MEPFuller Matt, you were right to make the point. Bad and good folks on both sides of the aisle. You weren’t owned. You owned it!
— Jim Pfaff (@jimpfaff) May 20, 2017
But, it seems Huelskamp scored the Twitter win for the day with his response to Fuller and follow-up tweet to one reader’s comment.
@MEPFuller @kampeas I did better! I was sexting & accidentally sent a very obscene message to my Congressman. I was horrified & apologized quickly. He laughed!
— Wilson E. Allen (@Wilson46201) May 19, 2017
@Wilson46201 @MEPFuller @kampeas Was that Anthony Weiner?
